Line-up
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet arrangement of the previous albums. It was a more ferocious, constant effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. Its edgier sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and included drummer Bobby Kimball's improved virtuosity on drums, and a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more refined, sharper, and less derivative than on previous recordings.
After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live concert that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The studio album came out just a few months later and the band embarked on a long-distance tour to promote the album. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded before. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album called Then and Now. It was the first album in the history of the band not to include any single song that had the word "A" in its title and it included one previously not released track, "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure, and the vocalist Williams was suffering from a serious laryngitis infection that limited his singing abilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in early 2006 to discuss the possibility of reforming the group. This lineup, minus Howe (who was busy with Yes at the time) was eventually referred to as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
